Our History

Bergen Engineering Co. (BEC) was founded in 1945 by husband and wife team Barney and Inez Branca. The company began in Lodi, New Jersey, as a full-service construction and engineering firm offering both design and build services. The company’s mission was “to provide a building service to the community with the utmost integrity and honesty, and to give each client a quality product so that all involved can be proud.”

Bergen Engineering had its first big success in the Meadowlands region, a marshland area of northern New Jersey that was historically polluted and contaminated. In 1961, BEC perfected an innovative construction method called “muck and fill” which removed contaminated material from the area and replaced it with suitable building material. This method transformed the Meadowlands from an abandoned and polluted marsh into a region that now boosts some of the largest developments in the state, including MetLife Stadium and American Dream.

In 1965, Bergen Engineering moved their main office to the East Rutherford Industrial Park, adjacent to the Meadowlands. Since then, the company has continued to focus on the region and has built over over 3,150,000 square feet of construction space in the Meadowlands alone.

Today, Bergen Engineering is one of New Jersey's largest and most successful general contracting firms. The company remains family-owned and operated, and is currently led by Barney and Inez’s son, Richard Branca.
